Motorola 2nd Gen Moto 360 Smartwatch

  • Pretty classy piece of wrist candy here, available in men’s silver with brown leather band, men’s black with black steel band, or women’s silver with silver steel band
  • It’s an Android smart watch but it’s also compatible with iPhone, huzzah!
  • 2nd generation Moto 360, so you avoid the bugs of the 1st generation and the high price of (and long wait for) the yet-to-be-announced 3rd generation
  • Now includes a wireless charging stand, so keeping it juiced is as easy as setting it down
  • Other improvements on the 1st gen: higher-resolution display, more customization, easier to swap bands, always-on display mode, just a generally more grown-up look
  • Do we need to explain this? It does all the smart watch stuff you’d expect, with apps and messages and your pulse and remote-controlling your phone, etc.
  • Mens and Womens only describes the band, which is replaceable with any standard 22mm watch band anyway so pick what you want
  • You can only buy one because they’re SO AWESOME sorry
  • Model: 00826NARTL, 00817NARTL, 00819NARTL (c’mon. Motorola, you have a retro-cool product name like “Moto 360” and you screw up the model numbers with this garbage?)

Talkin' 'bout our generation.

Why should you buy this Motorola Moto 360 second-generation smartwatch instead of the now-cheaper first generation, or waiting another year to see if they release a third generation? Here’s why:

Because it’s the first generation after the first generation.

OK, that’s a long way of saying “second generation.” But what we really mean is, when you want a gadget, you should buy the earliest one that has been updated and designed after real world users have gotten their hands on it.

The first-gen device is a rough draft. It’s buggy. It lacks features that just weren’t ready in time. It’s designed for purposes a little different than what people wind up using it for. There was no app store when the first iPhone was released.

No amount of research and testing can precisely replicate what happens when a device finally hits the hands of actual people. Not even the savviest developers and designers can possibly anticipate what their creation will look like out there in the wider world of weirdos. Or what interesting things their competitors might do that would be worth stealing.

The biggest leap in the evolution of any gadget is always between stages 0 and 1, between the thing existing and the thing not existing. And the next biggest leap is between 1 and 2.

This 2nd-gen Motorola Moto 360 Smartwatch has a much faster processor than its predecessor. The Android Wear OS is now compatible with iPhone. It comes with a wireless charging stand, so charging it is as easy as setting it on your dresser or nightstand.

The display is a little sharper now, with a resolution bump from higher pixel density. It also has an always-on mode where you can just leave the display showing all the time, a big step up from the first generation if you’re the type who wants your watch to look like a watch. That display face is way more customizable now, too.

Speaking of customizable, it’s much easier to swap bands on this new version (a trick Motorola borrowed from the Apple Watch). And the design of the watch itself has been subtly refined from bezel to band, so it looks and feels more like a watch and less like a sci-fi movie prop.

You know what might be even better? The 3rd generation version that, word on the street has it, will be along sometime in 2017. Often, a looming new model is why we were able to get ahold of a gadget like this at a price like this, as Motorola goes out with the old, in with the new.

But, of course, the leap from 2 to 3 is never as big as the leap from 1 to 2. If you’re willing to wait a year to pay more for some marginal upgrades, go ahead and buy that 3rd generation Moto 360 whenever it actually comes out. If you’d rather spend that year using a smartwatch instead of waiting for one, you know where the buy button is.
