A Weekend Playlist Clips Show

Hey, Meh writer @JasonToon here. A lot of you are probably “check Meh at work” types. I am, too. And many of you are probably “don’t care what the story is about, just want to see the product” types. Can’t say I blame you for that, either.

But if you usually only stop by during the working week and you do have some interest in the stuff I blather about, let me hip you to this weekend playlist thing I do every Sunday. I’ve done 30 of them now (including a few proto-posts before it was a weekly thing) - here’s a weekday taste of the weekend playlists you’re missing (also available as a YouTube playlist).

Sometimes I take a look at a genre, like the introduction to library music that included Keith Mansfield’s “The Great Outdoors”:

Sometimes I try to identify a genre that hasn’t really been named yet, like psychedelic country. What else would you call “My Condition” by Kenny Rogers & the First Edition?:

The product of the day will sometimes suggest a rewarding musical tangent. The brand name “Xpress” inspired a reflection on how X is the punkest letter, illustrated by punk classics like “I Don’t Wanna Go Out” by the Australian band X:

For a hard-sided roller suitcase, I put together a travel mixtape, sending you on your way with the likes of “Air Travel” by Ray & Bob:

And for a shower speaker, I compiled a shower soundtrack including squeaky-clean cuts like the sudsy “Shampoo” by After School:

I’ll take basically any excuse to (virtually) spin some cool shit. A set of knives led to the concept of “deep cuts” which I then refined to 12 Great British Deep Cuts because I’m a British rock freak. Whatever it takes to get the Kinks’ mighty “Come On Now” into more ears:

The utilitarian mandate to put together a walking playlist of songs between 100 and 120 BPM let me sneak in one of my top jams of the past couple of years, “Whatever I Want” by Colleen Green:

Just this past Sunday, the brand name “Garadise” gave me all the excuse I needed to cram in a tribute to the Paradise Garage, the legendary New York disco where superstars, street kids, gays, and art weirdos grooved to records like “Porcupine” by Nature Zone:

The most fun I have doing these, though, is seeing how much musical territory I can cover with one lyrical subject or mood. A smart lightbulb made me think about how many different - very different - songs are called “Lights Out”, from Green Day to Nat King Cole. Along the way I discovered this storming 1958 45 of that name by one Jerry Byrne:

My personal favorite of all the playlists I’ve done is also one of the most diverse. Songs for relaxation included jazz from the '40s and '60s; funk from the '70s; acoustic guitar music from Guinea, Brazil, and Appalachia; dub reggae; and this Swedish fiddle melody, “Spelmansglädje” by Eric Sahlström:

Anyway, if you don’t mind indulging an aging punk’s wanderings through the galactic jukebox, or if you just want to test-drive your new Gear Head Bluetooth Headphones (gotta work that product name in somewhere!), tune in Sundays for more of the same. And if you’d sensibly prefer to spend your weekends away from your computer, dive into the weekend playlist archive for more than you could ever possibly want. Enjoy:
