Be A Model Role Model

As a child, you’re provided certain toys to challenge your dexterity. You are given blocks, then legos, then more advanced building sets. They help your mind grow, and best of all, you don’t even realize it. Because they’re so fun.

After that, what happens is you grow up and then making models is lame. You’re supposed to filter all of that ingenuity into your homework or your job. You’re not supposed to build little airplanes anymore; you’re supposed to build a shed in the backyard in which you will house the tools you need for completing other purely practical tasks around your property. If you enjoy handy work, okay. But it’s not why you’re doing it.

The closest thing to model-making that’s permitted of an adult is restoration. You can fix up an old convertible or reupholster a busted loveseat. Those things are fine, because the end product will be usable for something. Again: it all comes back to practicality. The thing is, restoration is expensive. Not everyone can pay to gut and remodel an airstream trailer. It’s way more financially responsible to buy these Metal Puzzles. Not to mention, it requires less space and manpower.

So why then are they looked down upon? Why is the character with a model hobby in the movie always the reclusive nerd? Why is putting together a fun little 3-dimensional puzzle considered a “guilty pleasure” rather than just a “pleasure”?

Because you allow it, that’s why.

But you don’t have to! You can say, “screw it. I’m buying this 5 pack of Model Technics Metal Puzzles. So if you need me, I’ll be at my desk, fitting tiny pieces together into something exciting. Because that’s what I want to do, and no, I won’t apologize.”
