The last time we sold 456 Ricola Cough Drops, we charged $19. Now, we’re knocking the price down by $4. Why? We’d love to tell you it has something to do with market fluctuations or something business-y sounding like that. But the truth is, these things expire in January. So, we kinda gotta get rid of them.

Now, you might be thinking, 456 cough drops? That I need to use before January? That’s a bit of a stretch, isn’t it? Maybe. That depends on if you believe in expiration dates for what’s basically a slightly soothing hard candy. Like, this isn’t milk here. They’re not going to go sour. They might, however, lose some of their potency. At least, that’s according to the highly reliable reference source Yahoo Answers.

In response to the question, “Is it ok to have expired cough/throat drops?”, user Scooby Doo provides the following agreed upon best response:

it might not be as effective. I’ve already taken stuff that was expired and nothing happened to me.

On the one hand, the user has solved a whole slew of mysteries with far greater stakes than The Mystery Of Whether Or Not To Suck On Expired Cough Drops. On the other hand, Scooby’s reliance on personal anecdotal evidence here is alarming, especially when you consider his immune system is likely a mess after a lifetime of mainlining Scooby Snacks.

Really, though, the expiration date should not be a concern. If you’re worried about using 456 cough drops between now and the new year, it’s only because you’re too caught up in the moment. It’s 80 degrees outside. The sun is shining. You’re used to doing wildly reckless things like not wearing sweaters. Or showering and then stepping outside without drying your hair. Or just stepping outside at all.

But soon enough, the days will get colder and shorter, and your throat will get scratchy, and so will your coworkers’ and then you’ll be thinking, Why didn’t I spend $15 on 456 cough drops when you had a chance?

And that, friends, will be a mystery not even the great Scooby Doo can solve.
