Sweat It Out

Happy International Yoga Day! Or, actually, happy day after International Yoga Day. Look, we don’t call ourselves Meh because we’re totally on top of everything.

My own first exposure to yoga was on the tennis team in middle school. The teacher who served as our coach liked it, so we would begin each practice with a few poses. It was nice, but it also gave me the wrong idea. Yoga is about loosening up, I thought. Yoga is about holding still and clearing your mind. Yoga is more akin to a breathing exercise than a sprint or a set of reps on the bench press. You know the thing where you light some sage and wave it around your new house? Yoga’s a lot like that. But for the body.

And some of this is true. Yoga can loosen you up. It can clear your mind. It is like sage for the brain. And if that’s all you’re looking for, great! Do a few poses and get centered.
