Nobody ever accused me of being an “early adopter”. I like to make an informed decision about a mature, proven quantity. I’m like the Quintus Arrius of shopping for durable goods.
Because what am I, made of (or otherwise in a position to expect regular access to) money? I’ve been burned before! I bought my favorite movies on digital video disc, and enjoyed them for a mere decade before Blu-rays came out. And OK, ten years is a pretty good run, actually. And I suppose I still enjoy them. So maybe that’s a bad example. But I’ve felt burned before!
And I’m telling you, I will never understand electric cars. I know, I know, they’re the next big thing, and fossil fuels are a dead end, and something about the polar bears, etc., etc., Petecetera. But I can’t help feeling like the egghead class is pulling a big joke on me. I mean, how am I supposed to even make sense of all the variables?
Like: This one uses this battery, and that one uses that battery, and how do you know the range, and how do you balance cost concerns against “power to weight ratio”, and what even is “power to weight ratio” anyway? I’m not trying to earn an engineering degree here; I just want to fetch my groceries once a week.
So I read, and I research, and I compile data on my own personal driving habits, and I track the cost of gasoline, and I take frequent breaks to rewatch Ben-Hur on DVD, and get real steamed about how if I’d just waited eight more years I could have gotten it on Blu-ray, and I also look at Consumer Reports.
And then, after taking great pains to understand this new and bewildering market, when I think I’ve finally decided which electric vehicle is right for me, I make my purchase! Only to find out my brand-new electric GMC Sierra Denali is like one twenty-fourth the size of the gasoline-powered version!? Exactly what kind of groceries am I supposed to haul in this thing? Mentos?
