welcome to the chardonnayborhood!

did you know chardonnay dates back to the Cistercian monks around 1330? if you didn’t know that, try to keep it in mind, and the following dialogue might be slightly amusing.

FRÈRE YANN: Frère David, thank you. What a wonderful party.

FRÈRE DAVID: Yes, it was. I very much enjoyed the wine and crackers.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: Feel free to stay longer, if you'd like.

FRÈRE DAVID: I’m afraid I'd better not.

FRÈRE YANN: Indeed. I’ve got lots of flagellatin’ to do in the morning.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: Ah, yes. Pope Benedict’s Flagellatin’ Friday. Well, I won’t keep either of you.

FRÈRE DAVID: So, Frère Anatole, it looks like we didn’t quite get to that bottle of chardonnay I brought over.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: Oh. Were you going to want that back, Frère David?

FRÈRE DAVID: Well … you didn’t open it, that's all. I thought you were going to open it tonight, but you didn’t. That’s why I brought it over, is the thing.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: I thought it was a gift of gratitude for my hospitality.

FRÈRE DAVID: Oh. I, er. Of course I’m grateful for your hospitality, Frère Anatole.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: But the wine was not a gift to demonstrate as such. You only brought it because you thought we'd drink it tonight?

FRÈRE DAVID: I brought it to share. You know. SHARING. Maybe you read about it in some stained glass …?

FRÈRE ANATOLE: Oh, that’s pretty low, Dave. I give a lot.

FRÈRE YANN: Maybe we should -

FRÈRE DAVID: What about the time I needed to borrow that bucket, and you weren’t using the bucket, but you still wouldn’t let me borrow the bucket‽

FRÈRE ANATOLE: This is not the same as the bucket incident and you know it. Besides, you’re notoriously bad with buckets. Out in the garden you’re known as ‘Frère Bucket Breaker’ because you broke Frère Horace’s bucket.

FRÈRE DAVID: We sure do have a lot of buckets.

FRÈRE ANATOLE: We sure do.

Family, Estate, Vision.

It’s no secret Italians have a love for the vine in their blood – Ron Donati is no different.  In 1998 when he purchased the Paicines property his vision was for his son, Matt Donati, to grow high quality, unique grapes from the 9th oldest AVA in California. Soon, after rave reviews of the fruit, Ron Donati (ever the business man) got to thinking… good grapes make great wine. Thus is born Donati Family Vineyard.

In 2003 we produced Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Meritage, and Claret, Chardonnay, and Pinot Blanc. We held these in bottle until 2005 when we started hand selling the product to great restaurants, and boutique wine shops. Again, our ears were burning with positive reviews and re-orders from our customers. We had so many requests from the public to get their hands on this wine - we couldn’t turn them down. Though Paicines offers a lovely home for our grapes, with a population of 204 - it’s not the best place for a Tasting Room, so we chose Templeton, CA (right outside of Paso Robles) for our new home.
