Heartwood
Heartwood is a red blend based on our winemaker’s selection from outstanding lots of Rhone and Bordeaux varietals. Washington State is earning a well-deserved reputation for growing Rhone reds with classic cool-climate characteristics of earthiness and black fruit. Bordeaux varietals have long been recognized as a strong-suit here, with deep color, great structure and balance. Washington’s growing season is similar to that of the northern Rhone and Bordeaux in France.

2012 Buried Cane Heartwood Red Wine Blend, Columbia Valley
Intense ruby red hue, bright in the glass. Bright red fruits of strawberry, pomegranate and pie cherry lead the aromatics, with hints of tobacco leaf and mineral following. Youthful, primary fruit with a light creamy touch. On the palate, the wine is very well balanced with soft, finessed, silky tannins. The finish is clean with some spicy notes that linger on the palate.

About Buried Cane Wines
Buried Cane wines are named after a time-honored Washington State practice used to protect grape vines from frigid winter temperatures. Low-growing vine canes (shoots) are buried under the soil, then unearthed after winter freezes pass. Buried Cane wines are named with terms common in woodcut printing.

Washington State wine country has warm sunny summers and cold frosty winters. One time-honored practice to protect grape vines from damaging cold is to bury low-growing vine canes. These buried canes can be unearthed after winter freezes pass, assuring a grape harvest in the following season.
